“Yes we are all her boyfriends we’re reversed Mormons”

The New Girl ( I think I am going to like this show so let’s hope it doesn’t get cancelled) :)

So, I’m a Mormon (i.e, I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), and I watched the pilot of The New Girl. Some scenes weren’t my favorite, but on the whole it seemed like a pretty decent show. Pretty funny, actually. I was really enjoying that heartwarming scene at the end where the guys go to get Jess at the restaurant, you know, until they made a slur about one of the most important and precious things in my life. It’s one of those moments when you try to grit your teeth and stop from groaning too loudly.

I just want to make sure that you know that we don’t practice polygamy, and we haven’t since 1890, a little before this was written. (If you’ve heard this speech before, you can go ahead and keep scrolling through your dash.)

For those you you keeping score, that’s only a few short years after The United States of America stopped practicing slavery. Yeah, it’s been a while. Nowadays, having an extramarital affair or marrying more than one person is the one of fastest ways to get kicked out of the Mormon church. We find it repulsive and we take it very seriously.

After the Mormon church decided to stop practicing polygamy, there were small groups of people who decided to rebel against the church and keep practicing plural marriage. Some of these groups still exist today, and they’re called Mormon Fundamentalists. But they’re not mainstream Mormons, and they haven’t had anything to do with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in over 100 years. We do not approve of what they do, but we can’t exactly stop them. Warren Jeffs, those women in Texas, they’re all fundamentalists. They are to us what terrorists are to peaceful, law-abiding Muslims. They are not us, and we are not them.

I realize that you probably think that this is an overreaction, but you probably were never publicly denounced as a polygamist by your fourth grade teacher. I was. At the time, I didn’t even know what the word meant, so when my teacher argued with me, I had a hard time explaining to her that I’d spent all of my life attending a Mormon church, and I knew for a fact that she was wrong. It’s not an easy thing for a nine-year-old to do. And I won’t go into all of the times in elementary school when I was cornered by kids and told that I was going to go to hell, or that I was racist, or that I was a bunch of other things that I didn’t happen to be. Being Mormon is tough. A century and a half ago, Mormons got raped, beaten up, tarred and feathered, run out of town, and/or shot. These days, it’s not uncommon for kids to get bullied or even beat up just for exercising their right to worship as they please. It’s not even that uncommon for people to get turned down for a job just for their religion. It happened to me. So for the sake of all the little Mormon kids out there, and for your Mormon neighbors, friends, and family, I’d just like to set the record straight. Again.

You guys, we literally go door to door trying to explain what we are to you. It’s not that hard to find this stuff out.

If you want to hear the truth about Mormons and polygamy from the source (you know, instead of a fictional television show), you can go here. There’s a more detailed explanation by Mormon scholars here. I realize that this Tumblr post isn’t going to stop Hollywood from spreading hate, but hopefully it’ll open an eye or two.

I find the whole concept of being ‘sexy’ embarrassing and confusing. If I do an interview with photographs people desperately want to change me - dye my hair blonder, pluck my eyebrows, give me a fringe. Then there’s the choice of clothes. I know everyone wants a picture of me in a mini-skirt. But that’s not me. I feel uncomfortable. I’d never go out in a mini-skirt. It’s nothing to do with protecting the Hermione image. I wouldn’t do that. Personally, I don’t actually think it’s even that sexy. What’s sexy about saying, ‘I’m here with my boobs out and a short skirt, have a look at everything I’ve got?’ My idea of sexy is that less is more. The less you reveal the more people can wonder.

"Witches are naturally nosy,” said Miss Tick, standing up. “Well, I must go. I hope we shall meet again. I will give you some free advice, though.”
    “Will it cost me anything?”
“What? I just said it was free!” said Miss Tick.
“Yes, but my father said that free advice often turns out to be expensive,” said Tiffany.
Miss Tick sniffed. “You could say this advice is priceless,” she said, “Are you listening?”
    “Yes,” said Tiffany.
“Good. Now…if you trust in yourself…”
    “Yes?”
    “…and believe in your dreams…”
    “Yes?”
“…and follow your star…” Miss Tick went on.
    “Yes?”
“…you’ll still be beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren’t so lazy. Goodbye"
